At work, I help to manage hundreds of Windows XP boxes on a domain. Most of
them are Dell PCs that were shipped with XP so licensing isn't much of a problem.
Listed below are some of the scripts, registry hacks, and other things that have helped us keep things in check
Scripts
Windows XP Registry
To make a registry file, copy each listing and paste it in a text file. Then, rename
the text file to [whatever].reg. I have the names that I call them above each listing.
File Name: Remove - Network Browse For Printers.reg
Description: XP likes to probe the network for other XP boxes that have printers attached to them. I remove this because I manage my own printers and to cut back on unnecessary network traffic and processor use.

File Name: Remove - Network Browse Scheduled Tasks.reg
Description: XP also likes to probe the network for other XP boxes and connect to their Task Scheduler. I remove this because I do not use the task scheduler and to cut back on unnecessary network traffic and processor use.

File Name: Unload - DLLs.reg
Description: This forces XP to unload unused DLL files from memory. Bonus: it helps when removing spyware and viruses.
