Viruses suck. At work, we use CA Antivirus - not sure of my opinion of this but it wasn't my decision.
At home, I use Sophos antivirus, and when I work on home user's PCs and they don't want to pay for antivirus,
I usually install the free version of Avira Antivirus.
My rule of thumb is that antivirus programs help to keep out the viruses/virii? and if you do get an infection,
I reinstall the OS. Now at home, I have my own personal server, so data is stored there, but for those that don't
have this level of nerdyness, I copy their data to CD or some form of removable media, delete the partition, reinstall
the OS, install A/V and spyware removal programs, and do a complete update on both the OS and other programs.
Then and only then do I attempt to cop the data back. If anything is infected, then the A/V will pick it up.
I've never had a re-infection from this process.
