Grandaman.com - Viruses & Spyware
Viruses suck. At work, we use CA Antivirus - not sure of my opinion of this but it wasn't my decision.
At home, when I used to run Windows XP, I used Sophos antivirus. I loved it. Now I'm running Ubuntu Linux and
will never look back to Windows. The only exception is when I do my taxes, I have to setup a junk laptop with
Windows for TurboTax. They don't make a Linux version and it doesn't work with Wine either.
Most home users usually have some junk version of McAffee or Symantec, which I've never had any luck at all with.
For those poor folks, who usually are reluctant to pay for antivirus, I usually install the free version of Avira Antivirus.
My rule of thumb is that antivirus programs help to keep out the viruses/virii? and if you do get an infection,
I reinstall the OS. I do this because by the time I am hired, the malware has reporduced like rabbits on crack
and the system is next to unusable.
Now at home, I have my own personal server, so data is stored there, but for those that don't
have this level of nerdyness, I copy their data to CD or some form of removable media, delete the partition, reinstall
the OS, install A/V and spyware removal programs, and do a complete update on both the OS and other programs.
Then and only then do I attempt to copy the data back. If anything is infected, then the A/V will pick it up.
I've never had a re-infection from this process.
The main two that I really depend on are Avira Antivirus and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The others I don't really use much anymore.
